(Fall 2020) Hyperflex Example Course - Shared screen with speaker view
Phil Longstreet
17:42
Audio is very echoy, for classroom may need to look into how we could use a mic (possibly with the mask)
Susan K Gano-Phillips
18:39
Can't see writing on the board at all...
Phil Longstreet
18:44
it is almost impossible to read
Brian D Blume
18:44
yes, it seems like it is a little more difficult to hear Nick than some of the others when they did introductions
Shelby Newport
19:47
who was easiest to hear?
Murali Mani
19:48
Shelby was clear. Nick is echoey. Others are too soft to understand..
Brian D Blume
20:00
yes, I agree
Susan K Gano-Phillips
20:05
agreed
Phil Longstreet
20:07
agree
James Alsup
20:09
I agree. I can understand Shelby and little of anything else
Shelby Newport
20:10
thanks- noted
Brian D Blume
20:35
I can still understand most of what Nick is saying
Brian D Blume
21:24
this seems better to me
Ricardo Alfaro
21:55
not much difference, sorry.
Phil Longstreet
21:55
the hissing is a bit distracting when it happens, but it doesn't seem to be constant
Murali Mani
22:26
I also think not much difference; but I do understand Nick.. takes some effort..
Fred Svoboda
22:57
The masks probably are not helping, Murali.
Shelby Newport
24:21
We are all wearing different styles of masks in hopes that will also give us some information about the sound quality. Carson and I have homemade masks, Nick’s is denim and shaped, and Tracy’s is an industrial dust mask.
Murali Mani
24:51
How much is the delay difference between in-class .vs. distance learning?
Brian D Blume
25:48
If you want to test that, then I suggest at some point Shelby come up front where Nick is and try it. I suspect part of it is Nick's mask
Shelby Newport
27:00
Good suggestion Brian- we can try that in a bit.
Phil Longstreet
27:55
Is there an easy way to do a blackboard signup for being physically in class?
Murali Mani
32:07
voice drops off a bit..
Marliese Peltier
33:02
What was that app that was just shown?
Nicholas Edward Gaspar
33:39
I believe that was 'paper' for is
Nicholas Edward Gaspar
33:41
ios
Marliese Peltier
33:45
Thanks!
Brian D Blume
34:44
I notice that if someone has their mic on and makes noise/talks, it pops up over the whole classroom picture. Seems like you would want to avoid that- maybe have them pop up on the top row rather than the full screen (unless this is just what I am seeing). Thanks
Murali Mani
35:39
I think zoom has a "spotlight video"..
Phil Longstreet
36:29
I pinned the video of the classroom, so that it didn't keep swapping
Stephanie M Roach
36:30
That ringing feedback on the mic is horrible
Stephanie M Roach
36:53
I also pinned the video but then I had no idea who was talking when it wasn't the people in the room
Susan K Gano-Phillips
36:58
I don't hear any ringing at all - Its weird how some hear and some do not
Nicholas Edward Gaspar
37:16
We suspect the proximity sensors for the room lights interfering with the 360 detection mic
Maria Dolores Pons Hervas
37:24
What about Blackboard Collaborate Ultra? It seems you lean more towards zoom or bluejeans
Nicholas Edward Gaspar
38:00
Yes, you are welcome to use any tool you're comfortable with. We are just using Zoom since it was easy to get everyone added on short notice
Brian D Blume
39:11
can hear Shelby better
Susan K Gano-Phillips
39:13
You are much louder and clearer, but you can still tell you are wearing a mask shelby
Ricardo Alfaro
39:54
Shelby and Tracy was good, Nick still has echo
Brian D Blume
40:15
Yes, Carson is quiet
Phil Longstreet
43:10
doing online synchronous with break out rooms could work well for the group work
Susan K Gano-Phillips
43:36
what does it feel like to be in a nearly empty room as a student?
Susan K Gano-Phillips
44:43
are there are any issues with hearing remote speakers? can we try a quiet home student speaking?
Stephanie M Roach
44:51
Some Zoom strategies for discussion would help. Again, if you pin the classroom video so you can always see that, you can't immediately tell who is talking among the online participants. If you have it on gallery view, the classroom is awfully small. If you have it on speaker view, you get a back and forth toggle that means you wouldn't be able to see anything being added to the board while the other person is talking.
Brian D Blume
44:53
It's hard to get the size of the room. How many people could fit.
Stephanie M Roach
46:02
Are you in the OEL Conference room?
Shelby Newport
46:11
This OEL conference room is small, maybe 20’ x 20’
Fred Svoboda
46:25
Brian, my son uses the OWL cam for remote meetings of up to 30 or so; the limitation is more in the room you're using rather than in the technology itself.
Brian D Blume
48:22
Thanks, that helps.
Murali Mani
48:53
How does it compare to mediasite synchronous?
Fred Svoboda
50:08
MIke Farmer uses a similar but not identical classroom for intro level computer science courses. You might also wish to talk to him and take a look at his setup in MSB.
Murali Mani
50:45
I think CS and mgmt. use it?
Murali Mani
50:55
but not synchronous
Phil Longstreet
51:24
depending on how you are using it, a second monitor to be able to see the remote students would be beneficial, so that you can still have your presentation material on the first monitor
Phil Longstreet
52:14
Can we recruit the helpdesk to help with the technical support in the classroom?
Susan K Gano-Phillips
52:49
How are your voices holding up in having to speak loudly enough while masked to project across the room?
Stephanie M Roach
52:58
Seriously, the ringing I am hearing from the classroom participants is insane. It's an incredibly high pitched tinnitus-like echo around all the classroom participants. If I had a choice, I would never dial into another such meeting again. It's actually painful.
Phil Longstreet
53:04
Would it be possible to hire TAs through the government funding to help coordinate the technology during class
James Alsup
53:06
Apologies if I missed how the microphones were set up but could the instructor, or whoever is leading the discussion use a wireless microphone? It could improve the sound quality. I know that this is the suggested CS cyber classroom
Stephanie M Roach
54:09
Ringing is gone. Thank god. But volume is not as good--especially for Nick (mask is likely issue there).
Susan K Gano-Phillips
54:41
can't hear tracy. How much do they cost? the lapel mics
Tracy Renea Juliao
55:13
When the mic changed, I can no longer understand any of the spakers in the classroom. Can hear the voices, but the words are muffled,
Shelby Newport
55:23
Okay good to know
Ricardo Alfaro
55:27
same here
Brian D Blume
55:56
Dominic Fusero might also be able to provide insight about Mediasite.
Ricardo Alfaro
56:49
maybe using blackboard rather than white board migt help on seeing the writin with the webcam
Brian D Blume
58:09
more difficult to hear on webcam
Brian D Blume
01:00:02
Thanks very much, this has been very helpful.

Margaret Murray-Wright
01:01:19
would there be a possibility we could use plexiglass instead of mask-
Shelby Newport
01:02:30
Margie - we haven’t been talking about plexiglass in the face to face classroom situation, but we could explore it. It is still going to come with sound issues and of course the awkwardness of being behind a clear “window” in front of the class.
Brian D Blume
01:03:01
may want to switch back to louder audio
Maria Dolores Pons Hervas
01:03:14
When will this take palce?
Murali Mani
01:03:23
Thank you !!
Margaret Murray-Wright
01:03:28
Thanks Shelby, just trying to make the setting as intimate as possible
Murali Mani
01:04:37
Ricardo -- you can still send email to students before beginning of semester.
Phil Longstreet
01:05:06
If you post an announcement you also have the option to have that announcement emailed to students immediately
Phil Longstreet
01:05:18
so you could send a few before the start to get students prepared
Kevin Lorentz
01:07:20
Thank you!
Susan K Gano-Phillips
01:07:21
Thank you - have to scoot to another meeting. This was very helpful.
Maria Dolores Pons Hervas
01:07:41
Thank you!!
Dave Linden
01:08:03
Thanks for presenting another option for us.
Joseph George
01:08:10
thank you!
