Yes, the Greek word for “literature” is “logotechnia”

Sara just a comment — your point about the sound of war in Tolstoy’s writing is interesting, because Caryl Emerson (and some others) read Tolstoy’s aesthetics as aspiring to music, and point to many examples in his prose where a character’s musical experience becomes a key to the moral message. I wonder if their ideas about music are generalizable to sound more general in Tolstoy. Maybe a more experimental side to him, as well.

Synodal translation (into Russian -- it is the 22nd Psalm in Orthodox scripture): Если я пойду и долиною смертной тени, не убоюсь зла, потому что Ты со мной; Твой жезл и Твой посох - они успокаивают меня. Elizabethan translation (OCS): Аще бо и пойду посреде сени смертныя, не убоюся зла, яко Ты со мною еси, жезл Твой и палица Твоя, та мя утешиста..

Hm, no valley in the Synodal version?
Michael Makin
01:09:38
Exactly, nor in the Elizabethan translation.
Ania Aizman
01:11:29
Долина смертной тени is right there in the Russian… am I missing something?
Michael Makin
01:12:12
Yes, sorry, in the Synodal, not in the Elizabethan.
Olga Maiorova
01:41:46

Btw, in the AV, that verse in the 138th Psalm (Western Bible) is "Though *I walk in the midst of trouble*, thou wilt revive me:thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me."
Mikhail Krutikov

There are two different words in the original Hebrew: Psalm 23 has גיא which is valley (like Gehennom) but in Psalm 137 it’s בקרב which is “in the midst”
